Gallery Wall versus The Art Ledge

If you haven’t noticed, we love being up-to-date on the latest trends for home decor and styling. Every book we buy, Instagram we follow, and article we read pretty much revolves around beautiful homes and creating meaningful spaces. One topic we’ve really been intrigued by lately is how to display your art! With the recent launch of our furniture collection, we collaborated with a couple of absolutely fabulous artists (shoutout to Christina B Johnson and Ashtyn Sibinski) and had so much fun styling their abstract in all sorts of unique ways.

So now it’s time to put the question out to the universe, aka all of you lovely people: art ledge or gallery wall? What’s your favorite way to display your frames?

THE GALLERY WALL

Creating a gallery wall is a simple way to bring style and personality to any room — no painting or wallpapering required. All you need is a hammer, some frame hooks and a collection of your favorite art. Finding the right art for your space is hard, but hanging art correctly can be even more difficult.

After years of hanging art, we've come up with simple tips for how to hang art correctly so that you never have to second guess the placement again!

Here are the foolproof tips for hanging art that never fail us:

  • Lay frames on the floor and arrange until you are happy with the layout. Use painters tape or cut paper to frame sizes to help transfer your layout to the wall.

  • Vary frame sizes- start with one or two larger frames then fill in the gaps with smaller frames.

  • Hang frames both vertical and horizontal.

  • Mix up the color, style and shape of frames - Don't get hung up on matching frames.  As long as you are staying within a color scheme your frames will look collected, yet intentional.

  • Make it personal- It's your home and your place to show your personality. Display special artwork or personal effects that remind you of your family and special memories.

  • Hang frames no less than 1 inch apart.  You're going for eclectic and intentional not crowded and forced.

THE ART LEDGE

Picture ledges are one of the simplest ways to add a personal touch to your home's decor — and with maximum effect. That's because despite their name, they can also be used as small shelves to hold decorative objects, art, books or even a collection of plates. And the best part: A picture ledge allows you to swap out photographs and decor on a whim, or with the seasons. Goodbye, blank walls; hello, curated art collection.

Understand the Space you are Working With

  • Does it incorporate various spaces in your home or is it closed off? If it incorporates various spaces, you will need to ensure the frames and/or artwork you choose complement the aesthetics of those spaces. If it’s closed off, you’ll have a little more creative freedom.

  • What are the dimensions of the space? Know how big or small the area is you are working with. If it’s rather large, you can work with larger pieces or incorporate more smaller pieces. If it is a smaller space, it is generally better to work with smaller pieces or fewer larger ones.

Choose Varying But Coordinating Frames

  • To create more interest within your picture ledge display, choose frames of various sizes, colors and textures. The best way to do this is to design in sets of three and make sure the style of your frames or artwork as well as the colors complement one another.
